ARC 2010 Membership Renewals

Over the next two weeks current ARC members will receive their ARC 2010/2011 financial year membership invoice. Invoices will be posted to your current membership contact so if you have made any changes over the last 12 months please contact Alison Brennan as soon as possible via email to alisonb@phm.gov.au

The ARC are streamlining processes and as such, all membership fees and other payments are preferred as an Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT). ARC bank account details will be on your invoice along with simple instructions on how to let us know you have made the transaction.

Of course if this method of payment does not suit your organisation we can still process credit cards and also accept cheques.

If you are not a member but would like to become one go to the ARC website members page http://www.registrars.org.au/membership/and fill out an application form.

AGM 2010 – New Council Members

The ARC held its AGM on 25 February to coincide with the Fundamentals Now: Collection Ownership Access and Care Conference held in Christchurch. Welcome to four new members of the ARC Council – Anita Hogan, Registrar at City Gallery Wellington Te Whare Toi, Laura Stedman , Registrar at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image in Melbourne, and Sarah Quantrill Assistant Registrar, Loans and Charm WattsAssistant Registrar, Exhibitions both at the National Gallery of Victoria.

The Committee farewelled Richard Ferguson who took up the position of Collections Documentation Manager at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, London and Victoria Garton who has stepped down from the Council this term. We thank them for their involvement over the last year.

Georgia Connolly has moved to fill the role of Treasurer which completes the council to capacity. Watch this space for news of upcoming events. If you have any news that you would like to share with fellow ARC committee members please contact us at arc@ag.nsw.gov.au

2010 Conference Program Out Now

The finalised program for the 2010 ARC conference is out now. “Fundamentals Now – Collection access, ownership & care” will be held in Christchurch, NZ 24-26 February 2010.

AGM – new Council members

The ARC held its AGM on 30 March to conincide with the courier training workshops held in Melbourne that week. Welcome to two new members of the ARC Council – Karen Jakubec, Loans Manager at Museum Victoria and Sarah Pointon, Assistant Registrar at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney.

Emma Mahanay and Jacqui Woolfe have stood down from the Council this term and we thank them for their involvement over the last year.

Alison Brennan has moved to fill the role of Vice President but we are still looking for a Treasurer. This vital role is not overly onerous and we’d love to hear from you if you’ve got some time and skills to assist with ARC activities – particularly if you’ve got a brain for organising figures and signing cheques! Courier Training Workshops

The ARC is pleased to offer a specialised course for museum professionals who organise or act as couriers.

A one-day theory seminar followed by an optional airport visit on the second day will be offered in both Melbourne (30-31 March) and Sydney (2-3 April).

Travel Scholarship

Susan Thompson from the Powerhouse Museum has been awarded the 2008/09 ARC Professional Development Scholarship from a strong field of applicants. She will use the grant to travel to the European Registrars’ Conference being held in Basel, Switzerland on 10-11 November 2008. Susan is looking forward to the networking opportunities the conference will provide and to sharing the knowledge she gains at the conference with colleagues upon her return.

The latest ARC Journal (No.56 in rich purple!) was posted out to members at the end of June. This edition’s theme is Going Global – featuring a number of articles on the the issues that arise when initiating or working on projects of an international nature. It includes papers from the very successful Sydney ARC conference held in March, and the usual range of news and helpful tips.

Next ARC Conference

The next conference will be held in Christchurch, the largest city in New Zealand’s beautiful South Island, on 25-26 February 2010. Titled “Fundamentals Now: collection ownership, access and care”, the conference will bring together a range of speakers covering essential topics of contemporary concern to registrars and others who manage public collections. More details will be available on our Events page as they are finalised.

ARC Constitutional Change

At a Special General Meeting held at The Mint, Sydney on 20 April 2007 a number of changes were made to the ARC’s constitution. Principally this involved a name-change to Australasian Registrars Committee, formally including New Zealand in the scope of the organisation’s activities. At the same time, other minor corrections and alterations of an administrative nature were made to the document which had not been reviewed for some years. At a further Special General Meeting held at the Art Gallery of New South Wales on 1 February 2008 two additonal clauses were amended to address geographic representation on the Council and voting procedures.

Council Activities

The ARC Council has been devoting its energies to a review of the website working towards comprehensive enhancement of the information and services offered. This started with some minor tidying and the transfer of the website to a new host and address which was completed in June.

The new-look ARC Journal was launched with the Winter 2007 issue sent out in June. We hope members will be pleased with the fresh new design which will be rolled out to other ARC print and web-based material in the near future. The Journal, packed with articles, case studies, news and professional tips, has become a valuable resource for ARC members.

The Council has also spent time developing a membership drive to be launched shortly, and is looking at ways of increasing membership benefits particularly through identifying relevant information and resources and strengthening local networks.
